What are pickling and passivation?

Pickling is the acid treatment that removes weld heat-tint (temper colors), scale and the oxide layer from stainless steel, together with the underlying chromium-depleted layer left behind after welding. Passivation is the step that follows: on the cleaned surface, chromium reacts with oxygen to re-form the thin, transparent, self-repairing chromium-oxide (passive) layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. Together they eliminate post-weld rusting and extend the service life of alloys such as AISI 304 and 316. Bionil P1 (immersion), P2 (paste) and P3 (spray) deliver pickling according to the application method, while the PR passivation solution accelerates re-formation of the passive layer.
